Call of Duty: Modern Warfare marks the return of Special Ops, a collection of expansive, interconnected Operations that pick up where the Campaign story concludes, and Missions that challenge individual skills and abilities. As part of a joint force of Allegiance and Coalition operators led by Kate Laswell (CIA) and Sergeant Kamarov (FSB), you and your squad mates must stop and sever a global terror organization's access to weapons, funds, intelligence, and hardware.
Special Ops is available to all players on all platforms at launch.
Operations are played by four-player strike teams that must execute cooperative, multi-phased objectives to complete. The first Operation begins where the Campaign storyline ends, and each of the interconnected Operations further the overarching story of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.
You and your team have a variety of strategic options to complete each Operation. You may choose to take a stealthy approach to accomplish objectives, or you can take the enemy by storm. No matter the method, the enemy will react to you and your team's decisions.
Completing an Operation earns you and your squad mates rewards, including unlockable items and equipment that can be used in both Multiplayer and Special Ops.
Complementing the multi-stage Operations are additional Missions that can be played solo or with up to four players. While Operations give you the widest breadth of strategic and tactical choices, Missions are a more curated experience that tests your proficiency with specific weapons, Killstreaks, and other tools. After completing a Mission, your performance will earn you a 1-, 2-, or 3-star ranking, and you can replay Missions to achieve the highest ranking across the board. Additionally, each Mission includes an "Infinity Ward time" that you can attempt to beat.
Completing a Mission earns you rewards, including unlockable items and equipment that can be used in both Multiplayer and Special Ops.
You can play Special Ops by entering the Co-op menu and choosing one of the Operations options. You'll then get matchmade with three other players. Operations require cooperation and coordination to complete, so communication with your squad mates is vital.
Before dropping into the Operation, each player will also choose one of six roles: Assault, Recon, Engineer, Demolition, Medic, and Heavy. Each role comes equipped with a Field Upgrade and a class-specific perk. Roles can be chosen based on your specific playstyle or with a broader, team-focused strategy.
Along with the Field Upgrade perk associated with the role you pick, you also have access to Operators and Loadouts you've unlocked in Multiplayer, including Operators from both Coalition and Allegiance, as well as your preferred Primary and Secondary Weapons, Perks, and Tactical and Lethal Equipment.
You also have the opportunity to select three types of Munitions that offer a similar effect to the Killstreaks available in Multiplayer Mode. Munition boxes aren't part of your equipment, however. Instead, you'll need to find them in a random location across the map.
Separate from Operations and Missions, Special Ops Survival is a wave-based horde mode that pits you and up to three of your friends against enemy forces in intense cooperative combat. Set on one of three Multiplayer maps, you'll fight off waves of increasingly challenging and determined combatants in a variety of experiences.
Special Ops Survival Mode is available exclusively on PlayStation 4 until October 1, 2020.
