General Portal of Power Questions

Yes. Portals of Power are backward compatible, which means that the latest version of the Portal of Power will work with all Skylanders games that were released prior to it.

Possibly. The issue with using on the older Portals with newer games is that they may not be designed to work with features added in later games. Portals from games older than Trap Team, for example, will not have a slot for traps. It’s always recommended to use the latest Portal with your games.

There are four possible reasons for this message:

  • The Portal of Power is too close to an electrical source. Try removing the toy, then moving your Portal of Power, then replacing the toy on the Portal of Power.
  • You are using a console-exclusive Skylander on the wrong console. These are special Skylanders that will only work on specific consoles. These are:
    • The Skylanders SuperChargers Donkey Kong and Bowser figures as well as their character-specific vehicles which will only work on Nintendo systems.
  • You are using a Skylanders figure that was released after the game you are playing. To see whether your specific Skylander is compatible with the game you are playing, check out Skylanders Toy Compatibility.
  • The toy is broken. If the toy is still under warranty, you can get a replacement. Check out Replacing a Broken Skylanders Disc, Toy, Portal of Power, or Trap for more details.

Older Portal of Power models sometimes have difficulty reading a SWAP Force toy that has a top and a bottom part. Lift the SWAP Force toy about an inch above the Portal of Power’s surface as you attempt the summon and the Portal of Power should recognize the toy.

If the wired Portal of Power will not turn on, try plugging the Portal of Power into another USB port. If the Portal of Power works, your console or PC may require service for a broken USB port. If the Portal does not work in another USB port and it’s still under warranty, you will need to have the Portal replaced. Check out Replacing a Broken Skylanders Disc, Toy, Portal of Power, or Trap for more details.

There are three possible reasons why this is happening:

  • Your Portal of Power is too close to a large metal object.
  • Your Portal of Power is too close to an electronic device, especially another Portal of Power.
  • Your Portal of Power is on a mirrored or glass table top.
To reset your Portal of Power:
  • Move your Portal of Power away from any larger metal objects, electronic devices, or other active Portal of Power.
  • Move your Portal of Power off of any mirrored or glass table top.
  • Remove any Skylanders from your Portal of Power.
  • Unplug your Portal of Power from your console or PC and then plug it back in.

Dead spots can occur if more than one Skylanders toy is placed on the Portal of Power, especially when the toys are placed close to one another or when a toy is placed on the Portal of Power too quickly after placing another toy. Try removing all of the Skylanders toys from the Portal of Power, unplugging it from your console or PC, then plugging it back in. If you still have dead spots and the Portal of Power is under warranty, you can request a replacement. Check out Replacing a Broken Skylanders Disc, Toy, Portal of Power, or Trap for more details.

There are several possible causes for this error. Please check the following:

  • Make sure that you have two active controllers synced to your console. If the controllers are not properly synced, the game may revert to single-player mode and note the extra Skylander on the Portal of Power.
  • Move any Skylanders that are near the Portal of Power. The Portal of Power might be reading toys that are near the Portal of Power but not on it.
  • Your Portal of Power is no longer synced. Try unplugging and resyncing your Portal of Power to your console or PC.
  • Your Portal of Power is using weak or dead batteries. Try replacing the batteries in your Portal of Power.
  • Try removing and replacing the Skylanders on the Portal of Power.
If you keep getting this error after running through these troubleshooting steps and your Portal of Power is under warranty, it may need to be replaced. Check out Replacing a Broken Skylanders Disc, Toy, Portal of Power, or Trap for more details.

There are several reasons why this may be happening. Try running through these troubleshooting steps:

  • Make sure you are using the correct Portal of Power for your game.
  • If your Portal of Power is one that uses batteries, try replacing them.
  • If you are using a wireless Portal of Power, look at the receiver on the front of the Portal of Power to make sure the red light is on. If it’s not on, press the button on the front of the receiver to try and make the light come on.
  • If you are using a wired Portal of Power, try to plug it into a different USB port on your console or PC.
If none of these steps work and your Portal of Power is still under warranty, you can request a replacement. Check out Replacing a Broken Skylanders Disc, Toy, Portal of Power, or Trap for more details.

There are several reasons why this may be happening. Try the following troubleshooting tips:

  • If you are using a wired Portal of Power, unplug the Portal of Power from your console, then shut the console down and restart it to resync the Portal of Power to the console.
  • If you are using a wireless Portal of Power, try replacing the batteries.
  • Try other Skylanders on the Portal of Power and see if the Portal of Power responds.
If other Skylanders work properly on your Portal of Power after you try these steps, the problem is with the toy itself. If you have the same problem with multiple Skylanders, the issue is with the Portal of Power. In either case you can ask for a replacement if the Portal of Power or toy are under warranty. Check out Replacing a Broken Skylanders Disc, Toy, Portal of Power, or Trap for more details.

Fresh or fully-charged batteries should be last between four to six hours in the Portal of Power.

3DS Portal of Power Questions

No. The 3DS Portal of Power will only work on the 3DS-specific versions Skylanders games.

Follow these steps to bring a Skylander to life on your 3DS:

  1. Press the white surface of the 3DS Portal of Power to turn it on.
  2. Place a Skylander toy on the Portal of Power.
  3. Aim the 3DS transceiver (located at the back of the console) at the Portal of Power’s transceiver (identified by a white arrow) for several seconds.

There are three possible reasons for this message:

  • The Portal of Power is too close to an electrical source. Try removing the toy, then moving your Portal of Power, then replacing the toy on the Portal of Power.

This can happen when your batteries are weak or dead. Try replacing the batteries in your Portal of Power.

This can happen with a weak signal between the Portal of Power and your 3DS. Try to place the infrared transceiver of the Portal of Power (identified by a white arrow) closer to the infrared transceiver of the 3DS (located at the back of the console).

Bluetooth/Wireless Portal of Power Questions

The Bluetooth/Wireless Portal of Power is programmed to automatically turn off after three minutes without activity in order to preserve battery life. This can also happen during a game’s longer cut scenes. When you’re ready to play again, simply press the Portal of Power’s power button to turn it on.

To turn off the Bluetooth/Wireless Portal of Power, press and hold the power button for one second. The Portal of Power is also programmed to automatically turn itself off after three minutes of non-use.

This can happen when your batteries are weak or dead. Try replacing the batteries in your Portal of Power.

You can shut down your Portal of Power by pressing and holding the power button for three seconds. The lights located on the Portal of Power should turn off, indicating that the Portal of Power is off. If your Portal of Power refuses to shut down, it will automatically turn off after about three minutes of non-use.

If your Portal of Power refuses to shut down at all and it is still under warranty, you can request a replacement. Check out Replacing a Broken Skylanders Disc, Toy, Portal of Power, or Trap for more details.

The Portal of Power and the controller should connect to the device automatically. You should not have to go through your device’s Bluetooth controls.

If your Portal of Power doesn’t connect and it is still under warranty, you can request a replacement. Check out Replacing a Broken Skylanders Disc, Toy, Portal of Power, or Trap for more details.

Game Controller Questions

There are several possible reasons for this. Try the following troubleshooting tips:

  • Make sure you are using an official or officially-licensed controller for your console.
  • If you are using a wireless controller, make sure it is either fully charged or using fresh batteries. If you can, try plugging your controller in to your console.
  • Exit the game and make sure that your controller works on your console’s dashboard.
  • Make sure that the controller is properly synched to Player One.
  • If you have a second controller connected to the console that is not being used, disconnect the second controller and restart the game.

No. You will need to use the Wii Remote and the Wii Nunchuk for the Wii versions of the Skylanders games.

This can be caused by some type of interference with the Wii remote. Try the following troubleshooting steps:

  • Check and replace the batteries in the Wii remote.
  • Reposition the location of your Wii sensor bar.
  • Recalibrate the Wii remote to the Wii console.
  • Provide additional space between you and the Wii sensor bar.
  • Remove the second player’s Skylander from the Portal of Power and then replace it.
