Virtual memory is a memory management system that uses hardware and software to allow a computer to compensate for physical memory needs. When your random access memory (RAM) is full, it will transfer some data to disk storage. It will allow your computer to treat your disk storage as it was your main memory source. This system is mainly driven by the page file, which will tell how much space is available on your disk storage to receive temporary data.
Potential issues
When your page file is full, your computer will not be able to allocate any more space on your disk storage and instability may occur. This situation can be caused by:
- running the game with unsuitable graphics settings.
- having too many applications open.
- not having enough random access memory (RAM).
- not having space available on disk storage.
- a page file that is too small.
Solutions
This step-by-step guide will walk you through increasing your page file or optimizing your settings. Before going through these steps, you should at least try to:
- reduce your graphics settings.
- close some running applications.
- restart your computer.
Manage your page file
- Go to the Start Menu and select Settings.
- Type "performance" into the Search bar and choose Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows.
- In the new window that opens, go to the Advanced tab.
- In the Virtual memory section, select Change.
- If the Automatically manage paging file size for all drives checkbox in this window is not checked, you should consider checking it.
- If you proceeded with Step 5, make sure you have enough space on your disk to receive the Currently allocated value.
- If the current setting is considerably less than the recommended and Automatically manage paging file size for all drives checkbox is checked, uncheck it.
- Select Custom size.
- Enter the recommended value in the Initial Size box
- In the Maximum Size box, enter a value larger than the Initial Size value (twice as much, if possible).
- Select Set.
- Select OK to save the changes.
- Select Apply in the Performance Options window.
Please note: Always make sure your available space on your storage disk is at least as much as the Recommended value. Also, your Initial Size should at least be the same size as your random access memory (RAM).
