Guitar Hero Live Rival Challenges FAQ

Check this article for questions about Rival Challenges in Guitar Hero Live.

As of December 1, 2018, the GHTV mode within Guitar Hero Live will no longer be available to play. On that date, we will terminate the service for GHTV and servers will be shut down. Console versions of the GH Live mode will continue to operate as usual (except for community content features and online capabilities).

Additionally, on June 1, 2018, all GHTV in-game purchases will be turned off. Players can continue to use their Hero Cash and items on hand until the GHTV sunset date of December 1, 2018.

A Rival Challenge is a competition between you and another player to see who can get the highest score on one song in GHTV. You’ll know you’re about to participate in one when you see “Rival Challenge!” appear on screen just before the next song begins. Rival Challenges are assigned randomly so you never know when one will show up.

No. A big part of the fun of a Rival Challenge is the random factor. You will never have a Rival Challenge as the first song of your GHTV set. You must complete a single song in GHTV before a Rival Challenge will trigger. After that, you have a chance to get one every three songs or so.

Yes. You must reach Status Level 10 before Rival Challenges will unlock.

Yes. The option to turn off Rival Challenges is located in the Pause Menu.

When being chosen for a Rival Challenge, you will be matched with an opponent who closely approximates your own skill level – often the person just above or below you on the score totem for the last song.

Yes. Whether you win or lose, participating in a Rival Challenge will award more Status Points than completing the same song would in an ordinary playthrough.

Rival Challenges will only be activated when playing alone. Playing with friends automatically turns off Rival Challenges.

Rival Challenges appear on the Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 3 versions of Guitar Hero Live. The iOS and Apple TV versions of Guitar Hero Live do not have Rival Challenges.

Yes. Rival Challenges will only appear for players who have an Xbox Live Gold or PlayStation Plus account. Xbox Silver and non-Plus accounts cannot participate in Rival Challenges.
