Call of Duty: Modern Warfare In-Game Account Registration

An overview of playing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare with an Activision Account

With the introduction of crossplay in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, players who wish to play online are now required to log in to an Activision account. Accounts make cross-platform play possible, allowing you to play online game modes with your friends on all platforms.

Activision accounts also enable cross-progression on all accounts you have linked to your Activision account. Because game progression in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is stored on your Activision account, you can play on any platform you have linked to your account, and your progression carries over.

Before you can play for the first time, you will be prompted to sign up for or log in to an Activision account.

If you created an Activision account to participate in the Beta for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, that account can be used again. If you choose to use a different account, you will not be eligible to receive bonus content for participating in the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Beta on that account.

Please note: If you choose to link your platform account to another Activision account, your progress will not carry over.

1. What do I need to sign up for an Activision account?

The in-game Account Creation screen requires you to enter a Display Name, a valid email address, and a password. You'll also need to set your region and decide whether or not you'd like to receive marketing emails before confirming your account. You can also create an account online.

After accepting the Call of Duty Account Terms of Service and Privacy Policy, your account registration will complete, and your Account Summary will display.

Note that your Account Summary includes your Activision ID, which is the name you'll appear as in game.

2. What if I already have an Activision account?

If you already have an Activision account, you can log in with the account's email address and password. After logging in, your Account Summary will display.

Note that your Account Summary includes your Activision ID, which is the name you'll appear as in game.

3. What's the purpose of an Activision ID?

After signing up or logging in, you'll see your Activision ID, also referred to as your Display Name. Activision IDs include a hash mark followed by a series of numbers (ex: DisplayName#1234567). This number is unique to your Activision account and allows players with the same Gamertag, PSN ID, BattleTag, or SteamID to keep their names while differentiating them in game. The numbers also make account creation easier, eliminating the need to see if a name is available.

4. How do I change my Activision ID/Display Name?

You can change your Activision ID/Display Name with a Username change token. You'll receive a new Username change token every six months, and you can carry up to two tokens at any given time.

To change your Activision ID/Display Name in game, head to the Activision Account screen.

  1. Press Options on the home screen.
  2. Go to the ACCOUNT tab and select Activision Account.
  3. Choose CHANGE DISPLAY NAME.
  4. Enter your desired name and choose CONFIRM.

You can also change your Activision ID/Display Name online.

  1. Log in to your Activision account.
  2. Select BASIC INFO.
  3. Select EDIT next to your ACTIVISION ID and enter your desired Display Name.
  4. Select SAVE.

5. How do I add friends?

Head to the Social menu to manage your friends. Friends are sorted into two categories: Activision friends and friends on your current console. To invite a friend, you'll need to enter his or her Activision ID (ex: DisplayName#1234567).

You can also use this space to add players you've recently played with to your Friends list, accept invitations from other players, and manage players you've blocked.

6. I forgot the password to my Activision account, and I no longer have access to the email address to reset the password. What should I do?

If you have a platform account linked to your Activision account, you can log in to the account using your platform account credentials.

  1. Go to the callofduty.com login page.
  2. Choose the platform account you wish to use to log in, and you'll be redirected to the platform's login page.
  3. Log in to your platform account, and you'll be redirected back to callofduty.com.
  4. Hover over your Display Name at the top of the page and select BASIC INFO.
  5. Select EDIT next to your password.
  6. Enter a new password, reenter the same password, then select SAVE.
  7. In the pop-up, select the same platform you chose in Step 2.
  8. Return to BASIC INFO and select EDIT next to the email address.
  9. Enter a valid email address and select SAVE.
  10.  In the pop-up, enter your new password from Step 6.

7. I created an account for the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Beta, but my name changed. What happened?

After the Beta, we updated our Activision ID/Display Name filtering to restrict profanity and other names players might find offensive. The filtering replaced existing names that fell into this category with randomly-generated names. Follow the steps above if you'd like to change your Activision ID/Display Name.
