Crossplay and Cross-Progression in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II

Play and earn progress across all linked accounts and alongside your friends on all platforms

Crossplay continues with the launch of Call of Duty®: Modern Warfare® II, allowing players on all platforms to play together.

Along with this unified playing experience, crossplay enables cross-progression, which means your progression in Modern Warfare II will carry over across all platforms linked to the same Activision account, regardless of console generation.

On top of that, gameplay in Modern Warfare II’s Multiplayer and Special Ops – as well as in Call of Duty®: Warzone™ – will count toward your overall player progression and Battle Pass progression.

Essentially, whenever you play Multiplayer or Special Ops in Modern Warfare II or Warzone, you'll unlock something new or at least progress toward it. And that doesn't even include the rewards available during the seasonal Battle Pass system, another way to earn content starting in Season 01.

Progression at Launch

Get a headstart before Season 01 by playing Multiplayer matches and Special Ops missions to earn XP and level up through the 55 Military Ranks. As you achieve new Military Ranks, you'll permanently unlock default and customizable Loadout slots, all Multiplayer and Special Ops Loadout items, Weapon Platforms, and three core Special Ops Kits along the way. Your progression options at launch also include an assortment of Challenges.

Multiplayer and Special Ops Loadout items

Applied to your loadouts used in Multiplayer matches, items include Field Upgrades, Perks, and Killstreaks, as well as Tactical and Lethal Equipment used in both Multiplayer and Special Ops Loadouts.

Weapon Platforms

Each Weapon Platform includes Base Camo and Mastery Camo challenges. Most Weapon Platforms have Progression trees that allow you to unlock attachments you can use to customize your weapons. Learn more about Weapon Platforms and Gunsmithing.

If you receive a Weapon Blueprint, you will need to unlock the Base version of the weapon before you can equip the Blueprint.

If you receive a Weapon Platform — such as the FJX Cinder from the Vault Edition — the Base version is included and does not need to be unlocked.

Special Ops Kits

Similar to the Field Upgrades, Perks, and Killstreaks you apply to your Multiplayer loadouts, Special Ops Kits are available in three categories: Assault, Medic, and Engineer. Complete Special Ops missions or Daily and Weekly Special Ops Challenges to earn Stars, which you can use to level up Special Ops Kits to a maximum of Rank 10. Learn more about Special Ops.

Base Operator Challenges

Complete specific challenges in Campaign, Multiplayer, and Special Ops to unlock an additional 18 Operators available at launch.

Daily Challenges

Available in Multiplayer and Special Ops, three Daily Challenges give you an opportunity to earn additional XP.

  • Multiplayer: Each Daily Challenge you complete awards you XP. Completing all three Daily Challenges unlocks a Bonus Challenge, which offers a "split" objective and gives you XP after achieving one of the two objectives.
  • Special Ops: Completing two Daily Challenges awards you XP. Completing the third Daily Challenge awards you XP and Special Ops Stars and also unlocks a Bonus Challenge consisting of two Mission Challenges. Complete one of the two Mission Challenges to earn additional XP.

Career Challenges

Various Multiplayer and Special Ops Career Challenges can be completed, earning you additional XP and cosmetic rewards. You'll earn some Career Challenges, such as winning a specific number of matches, just by playing the game. Other Career Challenges may be more specific, requiring you to reach particular milestones in a game mode or with a specific weapon class, for example.

Career Challenges may have several milestones that award XP as you complete each one, and completing all milestones will award a Calling Card.

Camo Progression

Weapon Camos, available within the Customize tab in your Loadouts, is an overall challenge system allowing you to unlock an assortment of Camos to customize your weapons. Base Camo challenges are not tied to a single weapon. Instead, Camos are unlocked for all weapons when the challenge is completed.

Camos are broken into two overall categories -- Base and Completionist -- which also include subcategories. Earn all Base Camos in all Base Camo subcategories to unlock the Completionist Camo subcategories.

Weapon Mastery Challenges

Unlocking Completionist Camos also unlocks Weapon Mastery Challenges, which are unique to each weapon and allow you to earn Completionist Camo-themed Emblems and Calling Cards. Earning all Weapon Mastery Challenges for a weapon grants a unique Mastery Weapon Charm.

When new weapons are added to a weapon class, new Camo challenges are also become available. This means even if you’ve unlocked Mastery Camos within the weapon class, you will need to complete new challenges before you can apply Mastery Camos to the newly added weapon.

Will my game progress, content, and in-game purchases carry over if I decide to play on another platform or upgrade my console?

Game progression

Game progression is stored on your Activision account. Your progression (stats, rank, weapon, and camo progression) and unlocked content (camos and other customization items) will be available on all platforms as long as you play on the same linked Activision account where you originally earned the progress and unlocked the content.

Battle Pass

Battle Pass progress and content you unlock are tied to your Activision account, excluding COD Points, which are tied to your platform. You can only spend COD Points on the platform you were playing on when they were unlocked.

COD Points and purchased content

Some content can be used across all platform accounts linked to your Activision account, and some is tied to your platform.

  • Content you purchased with COD Points can be used on any platform linked to your Activision account.
  • COD Points you earn through the Battle Pass can only be spent on the platform you are playing on when you unlock a Battle Pass Tier awarding COD Points.
  • COD Points and any content purchased with real-world money can only be used on the platform where you purchased them.

Crossplay options

Is there an option to manage crossplay?

Yes, console players have the option to enable or disable crossplay while playing Modern Warfare II.

  2. Navigate to Settings and select Account & Network.
  3. Select your Crossplay option.

Xbox consoles have a built-in feature to manage crossplay settings within their console settings.

  2. Navigate to the Settings menu.
  3. In the General tab, select Online safety & family.
  4. Select Privacy & online safety.
  5. Select Xbox Live privacy.
  6. Select View details & customize.
  7. Select Communication & multiplayer.
  8. Select Allow or Block crossplay in the You can play with people outside Xbox Live column.
