Connectivity, the Network Status Screens and NAT Adjustments in Skylanders Imaginators

If you're having multiplayer issues, the in-game network status screen can get you back up and running.

If you are experiencing connectivity or lag issues while playing Skylanders Imaginators, this guide will explain the basics of online connectivity, and provide troubleshooting help to improve your connection.

Check Your Connections

Your first step should be to check the server status screen within Skylanders Imaginators.

Skylanders network 2

For more information on that screen and other troubleshooting tips, check out the Lag and Connectivity Issues in Skylanders Imaginators article.

Check Your Server Status

Your next step is to check the server status for your platform you are playing.

Check Other Elements

There are a number of elements that may cause gameplay lag in Skylanders Imaginators. Before delving too deep into networking issues and adjusting settings, try some of these troubleshooting tips and see how they affect your game.

Free up network bandwidth: Avoid other bandwidth-heavy applications on your network while playing online, including but not limited to streaming music or video content, or downloading files.

Use a wired connection: You will achieve optimal performance when playing an online game over a wired Ethernet connection. Wi-Fi connections have a wide variance in reliability and bandwidth, and can dramatically affect the quality of online gameplay. Wired connections will maintain the minimum bandwidth connection that is required for online gaming.

Change your TV settings: Most modern TVs come equipped with features that can cause input or display lag. At minimum, high refresh rates or settings of 120Hz or 240Hz should be avoided when playing online. The optimal settings should be standard refresh rates at 60Hz. Input lag can also refer to a delay in seeing the game respond to buttons pressed or movements made using a wireless controller.
  • Turn on Game Mode – Available on most modern TVs, Game Mode is designed to turn off features like motion smoothing that can contribute to lag.
  • Turn off all reductions – There may be several names for the reduction settings available on your TV, and all of them should be turned off as they all contribute to input lag.
  • Motion smoothing – Game Mode will often turn motion smoothing off automatically, but you should verify that this setting is turned off.
  • Update your controller's firmware – The Xbox One controller's firmware will not update unless the controller is plugged into the Xbox One. Follow these steps to ensure your Xbox One controller is up to date.

Adjust Your Online Connections

The following instructions will take you inside your console's network connection and Internet router controls. Be sure to select the correct console!

Restart Your Router
Often the easiest and quickest way to resolve connectivity issues.

Test Xbox Live connection
Xbox One

  • Turn on your Xbox One without a disc inside and go to Xbox Home.
  • Go to Settings and select Network.
  • In the right-hand column, select Test network connection.
  • If this test finds a break in your connection, you’ll receive an error message. This message identifies, in order of priority, where your connection failed, and offers troubleshooting steps to help correct the problem. Learn more about network connection test error messages.

Please note: You can also run Test multiplayer connection to identify issues leading to lag, disconnects, or other game-related network issues.

Test your home networking
The following tests require you to log in to the router on your home network to troubleshoot your network. You will need your router’s login credentials to proceed. If you do not have your router’s login credentials, you will need to contact your Internet Service Provider.

These tests refer to options that are typically found in a router’s menu. If you cannot find what you’re looking for, please refer to your router’s manual.

You may not need to perform all of these tests, so be sure to test the game after attempting each one.

If you are on an institutional (school), corporate, or other shared network, please refer to your network administrator for further assistance.

Test 1: Universal Plug and Play

  • Turn Port Forwarding off (if it is turned on) and enable Universal Plug and Play (UPnP).
  • Check your new settings in game. If this doesn’t resolve your issue, proceed to the next step.

Test 2: Port Forwarding

  • Turn UPnP off.
  • Turn Port Forwarding on. Learn more about Port Forwarding.
  • Assign a Static IP address to your console.
  • Check your new settings in game. If this doesn’t resolve your issue, proceed to the next step.

Test 3: DMZ

  • Turn Port Forwarding off.
  • Assign the console’s Static IP address to your router’s DMZ.
  • Check your new settings in game.

If the tests above do not resolve your issue, please contact your Internet Service Provider for further assistance, or refer to the following:

Step 1: Check the Nintendo Network Status Page

Check the Wii U Network Status page.

Step 2: Improve your Home Network Quality

The quality of a home network will have the biggest impact on game connection. We suggest the following steps. Note that you can test your Wii U Network connection at any time.

  1. Be sure to restart your router. This will often solve the issue.
  2. Make sure you are playing the game using a wired Ethernet connection. Playing a game using a wireless connection is the primary cause of lag and connectivity issues. Wi-Fi has a wide variance in reliability and bandwidth, and can dramatically affect the quality of online gameplay. A wired connection will maintain the minimum bandwidth connection that is required for online gaming.
  3. Disable any firewall or security features on your router. See your router’s instruction manual or visit the router manufacturer’s website for more details.
  4. Enable Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) on your router. This will automatically route the correct data to the correct ports.
  5. Set port forwarding on your router to the IP address of your Wii U using port 3074 User Datagram Protocol (UDP). If there are multiple consoles on your home network, you can also redirect UDP ports 3074, 3075, and 3076 to the console (one port per console). How to forward ports.
  6. Place the IP address of your Wii U into the DMZ of your router.
If the above steps improve your network connection to the game, you may want to assign a static IP address to your Wii Uwithin your home network. This will ensure that the configurations you made do not need to be repeated. Please note that Satellite, hot spot, and 3G/4G internet connections are not considered broadband and are not supported.

Step 3: Change your Playlist Search Preferences
  1. Select Search Preferences from the Playlists menu.
  2. Change the Connection Type from Best or Any to the recommended Normal setting.
Test Wii U Network Connection

  1. From the Nintendo Wii U home screen, select System Settings.
  2. Select Internet.
  3. Select Connect to the Internet.
  4. Select Connection List.
  5. Select your home network name.
  6. Select Connection Test.
  7. Select OK.
