Skylanders Imaginators Portal of Power FAQ

This article addresses questions regarding the Portal of Power in Skylanders Imaginators.

The following article addresses commonly asked questions regarding the Portal of Power and other hardware used to play Skylanders games.

If you have questions about a Skylanders Imaginators toy, please check out the Skylanders Imaginators Toy FAQ. If you are looking for the model number on your Skylanders toy or Portal of Power, please check out Finding the Model Numbers on Activision Hardware and Software.

Yes. Portals of Power are backward compatible, which means that the Skylanders Imaginators version of the Portal of Power will work with all Skylanders games that were released before it.

Yes. While it’s always recommended to use the latest Portal of Power with your Skylanders games, older Portals of Power will work with Skylanders Imaginators. Portals of Power from games before Skylanders Trap Team, however, might not work as well with features added in later games. You might also face challenges with Skylanders SWAP Force characters on older Portals of Power. In addition, Traps cannot be used with Portals or Power that do not have a slot for Traps.

There are four possible reasons for this message:

  • The Portal of Power is too close to an electrical source. Try removing the toy, then moving your Portal of Power, then replacing the toy on the Portal of Power.
  • You are using a console-exclusive Skylander on the wrong console. These are special Skylanders that will only work on specific consoles. Donkey Kong and Bowser from Skylanders SuperChargers as well as their character-specific vehicles only work on Nintendo systems.
  • You are using a Skylanders figure that was released after the game you are playing. To see whether your specific Skylander is compatible with the game you are playing, check out the article on Skylanders Toy Compatibility.
  • The toy is broken. If the toy is still under warranty, you can get a replacement. Check out Replacing a Broken Skylanders Disc, Toy, Portal of Power, or Trap for more details.

If the Portal of Power will not turn on, try plugging it into another USB port. If the Portal of Power works, your console may require service for a broken USB port. If the Portal of Power does not work in another USB port, and the Portal is still under warranty, you will need to have it replaced. Check out Replacing a Broken Skylanders Disc, Toy, Portal of Power, or Trap for more details.

There are three possible reasons why this is happening:

  • Your Portal of Power is too close to a large metal object.
  • Your Portal of Power is too close to an electronic device, especially another Portal of Power.
  • Your Portal of Power is on a mirrored or glass table top.

To reset your Portal of Power:

  • Move your Portal of Power away from any larger metal objects, electronic devices, or other active Portal of Power.
  • Move your Portal of Power off of any mirrored or glass table top.
  • Remove any Skylanders from your Portal of Power
  • Unplug your Portal of Power from your console and then plug it back in.

Try removing all of the Skylanders toys from the Portal of Power, unplugging it from your console, then plugging it back in. If you still have dead spots and the Portal of Power is under warranty, you can request a replacement. Check out Replacing a Broken Skylanders Disc, Toy, Portal of Power, or Trap for more details.

There are several possible causes for this error. Please check the following:

  • Make sure that you have two active controllers synced to your console. If the controllers are not properly synced, the game may revert to single player mode and note the extra Skylander on the Portal of Power.
  • Move any Skylanders that are near the Portal of Power. The Portal of Power might be reading toys that are near the Portal of Power but not on it.
  • Your Portal of Power is no longer synced. Try unplugging and resyncing your Portal of Power to your console.
  • Try removing and replacing the Skylanders on the Portal of Power.

If you keep getting this error after running through these troubleshooting steps and your Portal of Power is under warranty, it may need to be replaced. Check out Replacing a Broken Skylanders Disc, Toy, Portal of Power, or Trap for more details.

There are several reasons why this may be happening. Try the following troubleshooting tips:

  • Unplug the Portal of Power from your console, restart your console and plug the Portal of Power back in to resync the Portal of Power to the console.
  • Try other Skylanders on the Portal of Power and see if the Portal of Power responds.

If other Skylanders work properly on your Portal of Power after you try these steps, the problem is with the toy itself. If you have the same problem with multiple Skylanders, the issue is with the Portal of Power. In either case you can ask for a replacement if the Portal of Power or toy are under warranty. Check out Replacing a Broken Skylanders Disc, Toy, Portal of Power, or Trap for more details.
